Wombaroo Insectivore Rearing Mix is a complete food designed for rearing and supplementing insectivorous and carnivorous birds. Developed to provide the high levels of protein these species require, it can be used as a hand-rearing diet, nutritional supplement, or live-food replacement for a wide variety of birds.

 

Formulated with 52% protein and a full complement of amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids, this diet helps support healthy growth, feather development, and overall condition. It is commonly used for species such as magpies, kookaburras, ravens, frogmouths, birds of prey, seabirds, wrens, robins, and other insect-eating birds.

 

Wombaroo Insectivore Rearing Mix is designed to replicate the nutritional profile of insects and whole prey while providing balanced calcium levels and avoiding cereal fillers. It can be mixed with meat, fish, eggs, water, or live foods depending on the species and stage of care.

Feeding Guide

  • Wombaroo Insectivore Rearing Mix can be prepared in several ways depending on the species and stage of care.

Meat Mix

  • Mix 10 g (1 level scoop) of powder with 20 g minced meat or fish
  • Add a small amount of water if needed to moisten
  • Feed as a maintenance diet for magpies, ravens, kookaburras, frogmouths, raptors, and seabirds

Egg Mix

  • Mix 20 g (2 level scoops) of powder with 1 large hard-boiled egg
  • Mash the egg thoroughly, then gradually mix in the powder until a crumbly consistency is achieved
  • Suitable for wrens, robins, waders, orphaned precocial chicks, and as a protein supplement for softbills, songbirds, breeding finches, and parrots
  • Live insects may be added to encourage feeding

Moist Pellets

  • Mix 10 g (1 level scoop) of powder with 12 mL warm water
  • Slowly add water and mix to a putty-like consistency
  • Roll into small pellets for feeding
  • Offer additional water separately
  • Suitable for orphaned magpies, ravens, kookaburras, and frogmouths

Liquid Slurry

  • Mix 10 g (1 level scoop) of powder with 15 mL warm water
  • Allow the mixture to stand for approximately 2 minutes to absorb water
  • Add additional water if needed to achieve the desired consistency
  • Feed at approximately 86°F (30°C) using a spoon, syringe, or feeding tube
  • Suitable for force-feeding sick birds or feeding orphaned altricial chicks

Raptors & Seabirds (Whole-Body Eaters)

  • Add 10 g (1 level scoop) of powder per 100g whole fish, rodent, or day-old chick
  • Cavities may be filled using a prepared slurry and syringe

Mixing & Storage

  • Prepare fresh food daily whenever possible
  • Refrigerate prepared food for up to 24 hours
  • Freeze prepared food for up to 2 weeks
  • Store unmixed powder in a cool, dry place
  • Do not add additional vitamin, mineral, or concentrated nutritional supplements unless specifically directed
  • Discard unused food after thawing
